FAQs About Baby Swaddling

Hi Yall- Claire here (Co-Founder and Resident Mom and self appointed A+ Swaddler at TFN). We wanted to come to you with some of our most frequently asked questions about the how/why/when to swaddle your baby. Let's dive right in.

1. When to Start Swaddling

  • Start from Birth: Swaddling can begin right after birth and in fact, the nurses at the hospital are some of the best in the business so make sure you have them give you a lesson!
  • Recommended Until Baby Shows Signs of Rolling Over: Swaddling is ideal for newborns and should typically continue until the baby shows signs of attempting to roll over (usually around 2-4 months).

2. How Long to Swaddle

  • Until 2-4 Months of Age: Swaddling is generally recommended for the first 2-4 months, or until the baby starts to show signs of rolling.
  • Transition Gradually: Once babies can roll, transition them out of swaddling by gradually loosening the swaddle or using a sleep sack with arms free to allow for safe movement. There are so many great transition swaddles for when stage comes. Don't worry, it might feel like the end of the world, but sooner rather than later, your baby will be transitioning to cuddling with their swaddle instead of being wrapped in! (Please note, baby should be much older before placing anything in the crib with them).

3. Safe Swaddling Techniques

  • Avoid Too Tight: Swaddle snugly but make sure there’s enough room for the baby’s legs to move and their hips to stay in a natural "frog" position.
  • Keep Arms Secure but Not Restrictive: Keeping the arms down can prevent the startle reflex.
  • Monitor the Temperature: Use a breathable, light fabric and monitor for any signs of overheating. TFN's is made from 100% cotton organic muslin so perfect for breathability.

4. Swaddling and Hip Development

  • Allow Room for Hip Movement: To promote healthy hip development, ensure the swaddle allows the baby’s hips to flex and open naturally, preventing tight binding around the hips and legs.
  • Hip-Friendly Swaddling: The International Hip Dysplasia Institute recommends “hip-healthy swaddling” where the baby's legs can bend up and out at the hips, which reduces the risk of hip dysplasia.

Swaddling can be incredibly comforting for babies when done safely, and keeping these guidelines in mind will help promote healthy development and restful sleep.
